Purposes of document: To steer Scientologists to Usenet newsgroups and other points on the Internet from which effective dissemination of Scientology can be done. To document sources of information and Internet terminals that may be helpful for disseminating and safepointing Scientology on the Net. I see this eventually developing into a sort of FAQ on the subject. Usenet Newsgroups Here is a listing of some of the roughly 10,000 newsgroups on Usenet (which is a portion of the Internet) which may be of interest to Scientologists. Unless otherwise noted, all of these newsgroups are unmoderated (meaning that articles can be directly posted to them without going through screening by a person known as a "moderator", who screens the articles to ensure they are suitable to be posted in that particular group). alt.activism This newsgroup deals with activist-related activities (world hunger, crusades against injustice, and related matters). Since it is unmoderated, it tends to contain a lot of "flaming" and so forth. It's a possibility for posting CCHR-type articles, but you may prefer to post to misc.activism.progressive (see below) because it's "cleaner". alt.religion.scientology (abbreviated a.r.s) Here's the newsgroup that REAL Scientologists have grown to love to hate. It was started by some CAN people to spread entheta about Scientology and is currently our biggest PTP on the Net. Due to the general entheta content (a large number of entheta articles are regularly posted to it by a number of confirmed SPs) and to reliable reports that squirreled OT materials have also been posted here, it is strongly suggested that Scientologists who are not at least New OT V case level NOT read this group - doing so may be hazardous to your case. (OSA is taking steps to handle this, including getting regular theta posts placed in here - I know; I'm one of the posters. I post to a.r.s. but do NOT read it.) If you wish to help clean up this group, contact Buz Cory at buzco@dorsai.org for details. alt.politics.reform Discusses how-to-clean-up-politics issues. alt.society.civil-liberties (also see alt.society.civil-liberty) Contains articles relating to peoples' rights under law. misc.activism.progressive Information for Progressive Activists. Has some similarities to alt.activism above, but article filtering by the moderator (Rich Winkel) keeps it less "noisy". If you want to post to this group, mail articles to map-request@pencil.cs.missouri.edu. misc.education Discussion of the education system. misc.health.alternatives Alternative methods for getting/staying healthy. (Maybe we could publicize assists, Cal-Mag, and similar Scn remedies?) misc.kids Child raising discussion group. Might be a good opportunity to slip in some success stories on Scn helping child raising. sci.med Medical discussions. I've seen Prozac and Ritalin discussed here and occasionally overheard Scn discussed in not-very-flattering terms. Could be possibilities here if someone with REALLY hard evidence (medical as opposed to circumstantial) against the above drugs brought it up in this newsgroup - but be prepared to slug it out. Remember, you're dealing with MDs here (with a few psychs thrown in). It might make sense for some Scn MDs to post success stories about the use of assists, for instance. sci.med.pharmacy A fairly recently created offshoot of sci.med that deals, obviously, with the subject of drugs. Again, if anyone wants to take on Prozac, Ritalin, et al here be prepared for a slugfest. sci.med.psychobiology CCHR will probably be VERY interested in this one - one Scientologist once found two psych sits in it that would have been of interest to them. soc.rights.human Human-rights issues. Might be a good place to post articles about involuntary commitments of mental patients by psychs, for instance. Working with Usenet To orient newcomers to Usenet to work most effectively with it (that is, to effectively use its resources without irritating the natives), some introductory articles are available and should be read. These articles are frequently posted to the news.answers newsgroup and should be easily found there: A Primer on How to Work With the Usenet Community Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Usenet Emily Postnews Answers Your Questions on Netiquette (this is a parody focusing on errors that Usenet users make that are particularly irritating to other Usenet users; you should actually do the OPPOSITE of what it "advises" ;-) ) Hints on writing style for Usenet Introduction to the *.answers newsgroups Rules for posting to Usenet What is Usenet? Personal Observations On the Usenet Culture Usenet is an anarchy of individuals tied together by computer with one apparent common purpose - information exchange (to learn/trade information over the Net, find persons with similar interests to get in comm with, and so forth.) Accordingly, there are few ground rules - these are covered in the above documents so I won't repeat them. One personal observation that I believe deserves mention here: There is a VERY hot button on anything that even hints of censorship or the cutting of free exchange of information. Apart from threatening, bigoted, racist or other obviously VERY entheta messages, "anything goes" is a general rule on Usenet. This explains the Net's recent reaction to the Helena Kobrin letter (she was the Scn attorney who put the article on the Net requesting the shutdown of a.r.s.); obviously a number of people saw this as a threat to free exchange of information on the Net, rather than an attempt to shut down a source of MISinformation about Scn. (Just my two cents' worth.) This may also make it difficult for the Church to establish a working relationship with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which I will discuss below. (We probably COULD position ourselves well with Usenet by getting ourselves viewed as proponents of free and CONSTRUCTIVE speech and by promoting on-line basic study tech - such as MU clearing - as being pro-freedom.) Government E-Mail Addresses and Other Information The main FTP (File Transfer Protocol) archive for persons interested in on-line activism (aren't we all? ;-) ) is kept by the EFF, mentioned above. While it may be unwise to contact them directly until OSA or other official Church terminals have handled their on-line petition to us regarding the Helena Kobrin letter mentioned above, we CAN access this information. The FTP site is: ftp.eff.org The files that will be of the most interest to us are in the following directory on this system: /pub/EFF/Issues/Activism Here is a list of what I considered to be the key files (there are many others in this archive, but these are enough to get started): activ_groups.faq (Online Activism Organizations List) activ_resource.faq (Online Activism Resources List) congress_email.faq (U.S. Congress E-mail addresses) A VERY few Senators and Representatives have E-mail addresses, and most who have them only give them out to persons who are confirmed constituents (presumably to avoid being flooded by E-mail). However, there ARE a few known E-mail addresses: President of the United States: president@whitehouse.gov Vice President of the United States: vice-president@whitehouse.gov Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich: georgia6@hr.house.gov govt_contact.list (Contact addresses for the U.S. Congress, White House staff, and some other U.S. government contacts) govt_online.faq (Publically available on-line U.S. Government information) Summary: What I'm doing here is compiling information for the use of Scientologists in disseminating Scientology to the world - making it known, making its BENEFITS known, and bringing about a better and saner world as a result.
