Colorado Daily (University of Colorado student newspaper) Thursday, September 21, 1995 The front page of the Thursday Colorado Daily has a heading: Court denies Scientology motion The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to overturn lower court ruling against the church That was a box leading readers to page 2: (line breaks theirs): --------------------------------------------------- Scientology motion denied by Chris Logan Colorado Daily Staff Writer The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday denied a motion by the Church of Scientology to overrule a U.S. District Court judge's ruling that it return computer equipment and other material seized during an Aug. 22 raid on the Boulder home of Lawrence Wollersheim, an outspoken critic of the church. Church officials claim Wollersheim and Robert Penny of Niwot, who operates a computer cult-information clearinghouse, illegally published copyrighted material, including top church secrets on the Internet. Last week, U.S. District Court Judge John Kane ordered the materials returned, ruling the church had failed to prove copyright infringement. On Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld Kane's decision. Wednesday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court exhausts Scientology's legal appeals, but Wollersheim said he's doubtful the church will comply with the court orders.
